The Faculty of Law is preparing its students for a broad range of careers through ambitious and imaginative legal teaching and research.

In an increasingly complex world, there is a great need for legal leadership that transcends boundaries and borders. The Faculty of Law aims to nurture creative thinkers equipped to tackle the problems and opportunities of an interconnected world.

Offering the best possible education means carrying out world-class research and scholarly activities, providing service to society, and contributing to the University’s commitment to inclusion.

Philanthropy is critical to ensuring we can deliver on our academic vision to the highest international standards.

With your gift to the Law Opportunities Fund, we can ensure the Faculty maintains its tradition of excellence and continues to develop legal minds equally at ease with the intellectual rigors of academia and the demands of legal practice.

Enriching education in a pluralistic world

As the sole school to teach Quebec civil law in English, and with bilingualism at its core, McGill’s Faculty of Law has a long history of building bridges and transcending divisions.

We are committed to fostering a deep culture of pluralism, producing rigorous and imaginative legal scholarship to the highest standards, and helping students navigate and problem-solve for an increasingly complex world.

Across our expertise and research in human rights law, comparative law, and air and space law, your support will help us:

  • Provide student internship opportunities
  • Recruit international fellows and visiting scholars
  • Offer outreach and engagement programming

Collaborative inquiry with Indigenous legal traditions

McGill is committed to Indigeneity by supporting Indigenous students, legal traditions and pedagogy. Our integrated approach facilitates the inclusion of Indigenous legal traditions and offers opportunities for the common law and civil law to engage with them – and vice versa.

Through our teaching and scholarship in Indigenous legal traditions, we aim to strengthen enduring relationships with local First Nations communities, based on trust, respect, reciprocity, consent and accountability to support and amplify Indigenous voices and aspirations. Your gift will support:

  • Outreach, engagement and collaboration with leaders and elders, the Quebec Indigenous bar and Indigenous alumni
  • Building our capacity in Indigenous Law, including offering a new field course and inviting speakers
  • The advancement of Indigenous perspectives in the curriculum, including course offerings in French
  • The advancement and dissemination of scholarship that includes self-awareness and relational rigour

Ensuring a supportive learning environment

At the Faculty of Law, providing a supportive and inclusive student experience is an essential component of our tradition of excellence. Our Assistant Dean (Students) and Dean’s Lead for Black and Indigenous Flourishing and our multistakeholder Equity Committee work to identify and address systemic barriers, liaise with student organizations, and promote diversity in curricular and extracurricular activities at the Faculty.

Your gift will support:

  • Building accessible educational practices
  • Ensuring the availability of student support systems for learning
  • Mental health and wellness resources for students
  • Welcoming diverse students and nurturing positive relationships
